PP – Sports Trophies

One of my favourite projects of all time was the creation of trophies for various Paddy Power sporting events. When given this opportunity the aim is always to create an award which is both visually striking, but also newsworthy, in order to maximise the PR value of the opportunity.

In 2018, when Paddy Power first sponsored The Stayers’ Hurdle race during the Cheltenham Festival, I designed the world’s first moving, musical trophy. Based on the inner workings of a traditional musical carousel, I worked with an industrial design team to create a silver plated carousel featuring “jumps” modelled in 3D on the fences at Cheltenham, and horses and jockey’s modelled around previous winners of the race.

The following year, when Paddy Power sponsored the Festival Plate race on the Friday of the Cheltenham Festival, I created the world’s only Uranium Enriched trophy! Using special form of glass made with trace levels of uranium oxide, the resultant plate looks decorative and attractive in normal light, but glows brilliantly under UV light. The trophies were then housed in custom-built, decorative wooden boxes with their own internal UV lighting supply!

In between times, we also worked with professional WWE wrestler “Sheamus” to launch the trophy for the 2019 Champions League of Darts, where we presented tournament winner, Michael van Gerwen with a full-sized replica of a wrestling belt. Another first for the sport of darts and another huge talking point in the run up to, and during TV coverage of the tournament.
